Narrative in our short film
In our short film we want to apply as many theories and ideas as possible, this is as it will get us extra marks and make the short film have a better flow.
We already in the early stages have an idea of a few theories we are using;
- Todorov's theory of equilibrium
- Propp's theory of character types
For Todorov's theory, we are going with the 5 stages of narrative he suggested;
- The Equilibrium
- The Disruption
- The Recognition
- Restored Order
- The Equilibrium
- The Equilibrium
- The Disruption
- The Recognition
- Restored Order
- The Equilibrium
This is as it will have the same fundamental structure as other short films and therefore will have a good flow to the story line and therefore making it more enjoyable for the audience.
For Propps theory of character types, we have established some of them however due to our storyline it may be difficult to apply them all. Propps theory consists of:
- The Hero
- The Villain
- The Donor
- The dispatcher
- The False Hero
- The Helper
- The Princess
- Her Father
In our short film we will try to use as many of these as possible without drastically changing our storyline. However one character may be multiple of these meaning it could affect how the audience see the characters.
For Propps theory of character types, we have established some of them however due to our storyline it may be difficult to apply them all. Propps theory consists of:
- The Hero
- The Villain
- The Donor
- The dispatcher
- The False Hero
- The Helper
- The Princess
- Her Father
This does appear a bit vague. Don't feel you have to force your ideas to fit theory - instead, you apply those that seem to fit, or explain why your film might not fit any of them. When you apply Todorov, there needs to be more information about which stage is which point in the plot. Are there any differences between plot and story?
